Day 1

Home – Alice Springs
On flying into Alice Springs, take some time to wander the Todd Mall and purchase your own lunch. Our first stop this afternoon is at the National Pioneer Women’s Hall of Fame which is dedicated to recognising the special contribution of women to Australia’s heritage. Next we’ll visit the Overland Telegraph Station which is built in 1872 as a repeater station for the Overland Telegraph Line, and marks the first European settlement in the central Australian region.

D

Day 2

Alice Springs – Tennant Creek
Travel north from Alice, through Barrow Creek, originally a repeater station on the Overland Telegraph Line. Stop to explore and photograph the Devil’s Marbles (Karlu Karlu) – boulders precariously balanced upon each other against a desert backdrop before arriving in the historic gold mining town of Tennant Creek.

B, L, D

Day 3

Tennant Creek – Mataranka
Continuing north today, you will be amazed at the changing landscape – open grassland giving way to the vegetation and geology of the tropics. Travel via Daly Waters, Elliott and Renner Springs, enjoying a picnic lunch along the way. In Mataranka, visitors are lured to the thermal springs and its literary history; Jeannie Gunn, author of ‘We of the Never Never’, lived at nearby Elsey Station in the early 20th century.

B, L, D

Day 4

Mataranka – Katherine
Enjoy the Thermal pools before we travel to Nitmiluk National Park for lunch at the Visitors Centre and a cruise on two of the 13 gorges of Katherine Gorge, where you’ll discover the customs of the Jawoyn people. Please note there is a walk of approximately 600m each way, so ensure that you have sturdy walking shoes. Following our cruise, an optional helicopter flight will give you a bird’s eye view of this majestic river and gorge system. (BLD)

Optional tour available (additional cost):
›› 15 minute Katherine Gorge helicopter flight
(Prices on optional activities will be finalised and advised in writing prior to final payment due date. All option bookings will be taken at this time. We recommend that all options are booked and paid for as soon as possible after this time as they will be subject to availability and minimum numbers being met.)

B, L, D

Day 5

Katherine – Batchelor
Our first stop today is Edith Falls on the Northern end of Nitmiluk National Park. Continue on to Adelaide River which first came to prominence during construction of the Overland Telegraph Line from Adelaide to Darwin in 1870. After the bombing of Darwin in 1942, Adelaide River became the Australian and US military headquarters, with camps, hospitals and army farms, and thousands of service personnel stationed in the town and surrounding area. Travel to Batchelor for a tour of the Batchelor Butterfly Farm before settling into our accommodation.

B, L, D

Day 6

Batchelor – Darwin
Today we set out for a day exploring Litchfield National Park, so make sure you have your walking shoes, swimming costume for a dip in the waterfalls, shady hat, sunscreen and water bottle. Truly a beautiful destination, Litchfield National Park features stunning tropical waterfalls, swimming holes, monsoon rainforests, intriguing magnetic termite mounds and historical sites. This afternoon we arrive into Darwin.

B, L, D

Day 7

Darwin – Home
This morning, visit the Darwin Aviation Museum for interesting stories and aircraft, including a B52 bomber, 21 engines and rare amateur footage of the first air-raid in Darwin. Visit crocodylus Park for an early lunch and home to more than 1,000 crocodiles from hatchlings to 4.8m giants! Transfer to Darwin airport for your flight home.
