Day 1

Home – Kadina
After arriving in Adelaide we will travel via Port Wakefield, near the head of St Vincent’s Gulf, to Moonta. This unique town is steeped in history and is known as “Australia’s little Cornwall”. A guided tour and train ride will take you past buildings listed in the National Trust Historic Trail.

L, D

Day 2

Yorke Peninsula
After breakfast, set out to discover the heritage and beauty of the Yorke Peninsula. Travel through rich limestone areas which give Yorke Peninsula the reputation of having some of the richest farmland in Australia. Visit Minlaton, the home of Captain Harry Butler, who in 1919, made the first Australian “over water” mail service flight from Adelaide. See his famous ‘Red Devil’ monoplane now on display on the outskirts of town. Continue on to the Peninsula’s southern-most point, Innes National Park – a 9,232 hectare park of natural coastal vegetation which encompasses spectacular landscapes. Travel through Yorketown to Edithburgh and follow the eastern coastline and the Gulf of St Vincent to Androssan.

B, L, D

Day 3

Kadina – Whyalla
This morning travel to Port Broughton, a major port for fishing boats and also renowned for its deep sea prawns. Continue on through Port Pirie and Port Augusta to Whyalla, located on the shores of Spencer Gulf. Whyalla is a town famous for its heavy industry of enormous steel and iron works. This afternoon enjoy a guided tour of the Whyalla Steel Works where we travel around the 1,000 hectare site and hear the story behind more than 100 years of significant Australian iron and steel making history.

B, L, D

Day 4

Whyalla – Streaky Bay
After a hearty breakfast, view the largest provincial city in South Australia from Hummock Hill. As you join the Eyre Highway, observe the iron ore quarries at Iron Knob before entering the sheep and wheat country en route to Kimba. Stop at the Kimba Halfway Across Australia Gem Shop, allowing time to photograph the 8 metre Big Galah and browse the locally mined and crafted jade. Continue across the top of the Eyre Peninsula through Wudinnia which is known as “the granite country” where unusual outcrops dominate the landscape. Arrive in the holiday town and fishing port of Streaky Bay for our overnight stay.

B, L, D

Day 5

Streaky Bay – Port Lincoln
A very interesting day is ahead. Travel the western seaboard of the Eyre Peninsula and visit the spectacular natural formation of ancient pink granite called Murphy’s Haystacks near Calca. Be fascinated by the rock formations that can be seen from the Eye of the Needle Lookout near Port Kenny before following the scenic rugged coastline via Venus Bay to the pleasant township of Elliston. This popular holiday destination is nestled amid cereal growing countryside and is well known for its artistic mural, covering over 500 square metres in area, depicting the historical life of Elliston.

B, L, D

Day 6

Port Lincoln
Be treated to a guided tour of Port Lincoln, revealing the importance of the tuna industry and view the silos and huge grain hoppers jutting into Boston Bay. This morning we will step back in time with a visit to Koppio’s Smithy Museum. Here, we will reminisce and remember the lifestyle of yesteryear. Enjoy lunch and local wine tasting perched above the town at the Boston Bay Winery before a visit to the Axel Stenross Maritime Museum. Not only does it have a slipway in full working order but most of the exhibits can be handled.

B, L, D

Day 7

Whalers Way
Whalers Way National Park reveals some of the most spectacular southern coastline. Casual clothes and comfortable walking shoes are recommended for today; but for those not wishing to journey far, there is plenty of spectacular scenery visible from near the coach. The coastline is a stark reminder of what Matthew Flinders had to contend with while exploring the region over 200 years ago. Enjoy a picnic lunch in the National Park before visiting Constantia, a group of furniture craftsmen with an international reputation for fine furniture and furniture design. Constantia is one of the world’s last workshops accredited to the International Guild of Master Craftsmen.

B, L, D

Day 8

Port Lincoln – Port Pirie
Travel along the eastern seaboard of the Eyre Peninsula today, visiting Tumby Bay which is well known for its white sandy beaches and unspoilt coastline and also a favourite spot with fishermen. Continue on to Cowell, another important area with regards to one of the world’s largest jade deposits and also top quality oysters. Port Augusta, situated at the head of the Spencer Gulf, plays a major role for the Indian Pacific and Ghan rail links and is also a vital supply area for South Australian outback centres. Continue on to Port Pirie where the largest lead smelters in the world treat the mineral from Broken Hill. Also dominating the skyline are the huge grain silos holding wheat and barley ready for export. Stop in Port Pirie for our overnight stay.

B, L, D

Day 9
