Day 1

Brisbane – Cairns – Atherton
On arrival from your flight into Cairns, you will be greeted by your Coach Captain and Hostess before travelling to the Tablelands, stopping for lunch at the Lake Barrine Rainforest Teahouse overlooking Lake Barrine. Spend some free time in the village of Yungaburra known for its café culture and boutique shopping, surrounded by countryside which has been influenced and shaped by many (now extinct) volcanoes. Visit Gallo Dairyland where you will find a fully operational dairy farm, a gourmet cheese factory and beautiful hand-crafted chocolates. Continue on to Atherton for our overnight stay.

Day 2

Atherton – Georgetown
Today’s touring takes in some geological wonders, spectacular landscapes and quirky townships. Leaving Atherton, travel Gulf Development Road also known as The Savannah Way. Upon arrival at Undara Lava Lodge, take part in a tour of the visually spectacular Undara Lava Tubes - the world’s largest and longest lava tubes and home to a fascinating array of remnant plants and wildlife. Lunch follows in a unique railway carriage setting. This afternoon, travel on to Georgetown and settle in for two nights.

B, L, D

Day 3

Georgetown – Forsayth – Georgetown
Today we travel deep into the heart of the Gulf Savannah Region and on to a hidden outback oasis— Cobbold Gorge. Created by nature over the past 135 million years, countless wet seasons have spilled torrents of water through the narrow ravines, carving out deep gorges and permanent waterholes at the foot of spectacular towering cliffs. Today we join a guided tour consisting of a walking visit to pioneer John Corbett’s grave, fresh water crocodile viewing and a boat cruise and tour of the gorge. An unforgettable highlight of this tour will be the cruise in a custom-made electric powered boat and gliding through the spectacularly sculpted gorge in almost eerie silence, to ensure minimal disturbance to the wildlife. Enjoy lunch before returning to Georgetown for a visit to the unique multi-award winning TerrEstial which houses the Visitor Information Centre and the Ted Elliott Mineral Collection. The collection comprises over 4,500 specimens and is reputed to be the most detailed and comprehensive private collection in Australia.

B, L, D

Day 4

Georgetown – Karumba
Today we travel the Savannah Highway to Croydon, just south of the base of the Gulf of Carpentaria. Croydon is a small town with a big history that started with the discovery of gold in 1885. Today it is the eastern terminus for the Gulflander train service. Visit Croydon’s True Blue Visitors Centre where you will learn some of the history of this outback area before travelling alongside the railway track following the Gulflander line from Croydon to Normanton. After arriving in Kurumba this afternoon, we board the ‘Ferryman Karumba’ for a sunset cruise on the Gulf of Carpentaria. Karumba has some of Australia’s most fantastic sunsets so make sure that you have your camera ready. Return to the Karumba Lodge for a later dinner.

B, L, D

Day 5

Karumba – Normanton
Karumba, at the mouth of the Norman River in the Gulf Savannah is the easiest access point for the Gulf of Carpentaria which is why the town is the centre of the Gulf’s booming prawn and barramundi industries. This morning we will visit The Barramundi Discovery Centre and then travel via Normanton to Critters Camp to board the legendary Gulflander train. Your journey will take you through the old gold territory with a history to match the incredible terrain. After your historic rail journey, we will visit Bynoe Art Centre before checking into our motel for the night.

B, L, D

Day 6

Normanton – Cloncurry
Depart Normanton after breakfast and join the Burke Developmental Road. Rivers, spinifex, extensive cattle runs, spectacular outcrops of rock and roads that go on forever are all part of the scenery today. We will travel by the Bang Bang Jump Up—an unusual solitary rocky hill formation located in the middle of expansive flat grassland, before stopping at the Burke and Wills Roadhouse, located on the route taken by the intrepid explorers Burke and Wills. Continue on to Cloncurry where we will stay overnight.

B, L, D

Day 7

Cloncurry – Mount Isa
This morning visit John Flynn Place, which houses a museum commemorating the work of John Flynn and the beginnings of the Royal Flying Doctor Service – originally the Aerial Medical Service. Also in the grounds of John Flynn Place is the Fred McKay Art Gallery and the beautiful Cloncurry Gardens. Travelling on the Flinders Highway from Cloncurry towards Mount Isa, you will notice a vast difference in the landscape with the unexpected hilly countryside. Described as the ‘oasis of the outback’, Mount Isa is nestled among the ochre-red Selwyn Ranges, on the banks of the Leichhardt River and its existence and main financial base is the huge mine – the world’s largest single producer of copper, silver and lead. The highlight of any visit to Mount Isa is a comprehensive tour of the ‘Outback at Isa’ complex which also houses the Riversleigh Fossil Display and Isa Experience Gallery. Purchase your own lunch today while
visiting the centre.

B, D

Day 8

Mount Isa – Brisbane
After breakfast, visit the Mount Isa Underground Hospital, and discover how residents lived in fear of being bombed. Enjoy a catered morning tea prior to transferring to the airport for your return home.
