Today we’ll travel through sparse woodland and open savannah plains, with hardly a rise on the horizon. Lawn Hill National Park, in Queensland’s western Gulf Country, will come as a pleasant surprise with its rocky ramparts and lush palm filled landscape. Enjoy a picnic lunch along the way before arriving at Riversleigh/Miyumba, where we will meet our guide for a tour of the richest fossil mammal site in the world.

Day 3

Lawn Hill – Cruise Lawn Hill Gorge
This morning we’ll travel aboard Adels Grove’s state of the art solar electric powered pontoon boat, cruising the tranquil Lawn Hill Creek winding its way through the breathtaking Lawn Hill Gorge. Experience some of the most breathtaking scenery in the park; see ancient sandstone and limestone that has been gradually stripped away over millions of years leaving behind rugged escarpment, gorges and rocky outcrops with sheer sandstone walls up to 60 metres high that drop into palm-filled creeks and permanent waterholes. There’ll be time to relax with a picnic lunch, enjoy a walk or even hire a canoe (own expense). There are several walks that are graded from easy to moderate for those who would like to see more of the park.

Lawn Hill – Camooweal
Our journey today will take us to the last Queensland town before the Queensland/Northern Territory border. Travel along the Gregory Downs Camooweal Road before joining the Barkly Highway, arriving in Camooweal. Once the centre for enormous cattle drives, we’ll visit the Camooweal Drovers Camp and Visitors Centre where the droving era of Australia is being preserved for future generations. Tennant Creek – Kelly’s Ranch, Nyinkka Nyunyu Centre and Battery Hill
Today visit Kelly’s Ranch for something totally unique. Owner Jerry Kelly, an Indigenous Australian, takes pride in providing his visitors with an experience and understanding of his traditional culture, a stockman’s life and life in the bush. Enjoy billy tea and damper before continuing with the sights of Tennant Creek and stop for a picnic lunch in an oasis. Visit the Nyinkka Nyunyu Centre, and learn about the traditional owners of the area. Visit Battery Hill early evening, for an underground mine tour. A barbeque dinner will follow before returning to your motel.

Day 7

Tennant Creek – Alice Springs
Depart Tennant Creek and travel south, stopping at the eerie and majestic Aboriginal Dreaming site of Karlu Karlu, otherwise known as the Devils Marbles. Explore along the short self-guided walking trail which offers informative signage, and view the red rocks that range in size from 50cm to 6 metres wide, balancing precariously on top of one another. Continue on to Barrow Creek, which was the chosen site for an Overland Telegraph Morse Repeater Station, linking Australia to Europe and providing essential communication services. Enjoy lunch at the Barrow Creek Hotel which still has the original old bar, underground cellar and tin ceilings from the old pub which was built in 1926. This afternoon travel via the tiny town of Ti-Tree before arriving into Alice Springs, which lies in the physical and spiritual heart of Australia’s Red Centre. It is surrounded on all sides by the jagged MacDonnell Ranges and straddles the usually dry Todd River.
