Day 10

Grindelwald
Christmas Eve! What a magnificent location to relax over Christmas! Your next two days are free to enjoy the stunning scenery which surrounds you, and do as much, or as little, as you want! Whether you are a 'super active snow sports' person or a 'take it easy and relax' person there are numerous activities you can enjoy, and your Tour Manager will be at hand to assist and advise you. You will be in the heart of the Bernese Oberland - home to the mighty peaks of the Jungfrau, Mönch, Eiger (of 'The Eiger Sanction' fame), the Breithorn, Männlichen and the Schilthorn, as well as internationally known winter resorts like Wengen and Mürren. The skiing is of course fantastic! Non skiers can easily access all the main peaks by funicular trains, cable cars and chair lifts. At all 'drop off' points there are restaurants, cafés and restroom facilities - usually with extraordinary panoramic views spanning the jagged Alps. All around Grindelwald there are hundreds of kilometres of winter footpaths which often double as Nordic or Cross Country ski paths, as well as numerous toboggan runs - one of which is the longest in the Alps. Snowshoes can also be hired and you can take one of the well signed snowshoe trails. An evening snowshoeing tour is a very different experience! For those wanting to just relax, you will have free use of the pool and spa facilities in your Grindelwald hotel. The highlight of today will be a ride on a horse drawn carriage through the picturesque local countryside. This evening will be special as we enjoy a four course themed Christmas Eve dinner.

B, D

Day 11

Afterwards enjoy time at leisure in the old town centre. Mozart's Birthplace makes a fascinating visit, as does the ancient castle. Later we drive through the ornate iron gates and enter the grounds of the spectacular Schloss Leopoldskron, where we will stay for the next five nights. On arrival we will enjoy an orientation tour of this grand historical building, including the superb Chinese and Venetian rooms and the Marble Hall. We will discover the hidden staircase in the ornate, old-world library. Built in 1736, this rococo palace was lovingly restored to its current glory in the early 1900's by its then owner, the famous theatre and film director Max Reinhardt. Nestled by a small, idyllic lake with a majestic view of the Untersberg Mountain, Leopoldskron is not only the birthplace of the Salzburg Festival, but is also one of the principal locations of Rodgers & Hammerstein's 1965 film 'The Sound of Music'. This evening at our Schloss, we sample local wines with an Austrian wine connoisseur whilst enjoying dinner in the magnificent Marble Hall.

Feature Hotel - Meierhof.
Your rooms are located in the Meierhof - the historic building set by the lakeside in the Palace grounds, about 50 metres from the Schloss itself.

Lunchtime will be spent amongst the cobbled streets of Berchtesgaden. Later we visit perhaps the most beautiful lake of all, Königssee - famous the world over for its steep cliffs and fjord like lake. We have included a relaxing cruise along the length of the lake to visit the romantic pilgrimage church on St Bartholomew Island. This evening we will return to nearby Salzburg where we have arranged a special dinner in the St Peter Stiftskeller - Austria's oldest restaurant which dates back 1200 years!
